Hot cross bun season is well and truly upon us and new flavours have been hitting the shelves. From the savoury of the cheesy bun to the sweet blueberry or apple and cinnamon, it’s certainly a who’s who’s of flavour combos. The one I immediately needed to try was the Tesco Rhubarb and Custard Hot Cross Buns.
These are made with sweetened dough with added rhubarb puree, freeze dried rhubarb, dried cream and vanilla flavouring. Each for pack is £1.80 each and are currently included in the 2 for £3 deal. They sound promising and look fabulous, but what do they actually taste like …
The only good thing they have going for them is the colour because everything in the flavour department is lacking. There is zero flavour both plain, toasted and buttered. They are soft and light which is a positive but I am struggling to see where the rhubarb and custard flavour comes into it.
Looking at the reviews online it looks like the resounding conclusion is the Tesco Rhubarb and Custard Hot Cross Buns are naff. It’s a shame as they had such promise. Bring back the Red Velvet ones from last year!
Which are your favourite Hot Cross Buns?
