Oppo Ice Cream – Mint Choc Swirl

Oppo Indulge Guit Free Ice Cream

We have certainly been experiencing a heatwave this week, so of course ice cream is a necessity. Oppo Ice Cream is new on the frozen block and claims to be guilt free. Can ice cream really be guilt free AND taste delicious? Oppo believe indulgent food doesn’t need to be packed full of sugar or calories to taste good, which I certainly agree with, but whether this can translate into ice cream is another matter. Let’s face it Ben & Jerry’s appeal is all down to its creaminess and being loaded with treasured treats.

I came across Oppo whilst perusing the newest Weight Watchers magazine for recipe ideas. I was certainly intrigued by their claims and if by magic I spied a tub in the Co-Op later that day. Made using all-natural ingredients – fresh milk, cold-pressed virgin coconut oil and stevia leaf, Oppo currently comes in 3 flavours – Salted Caramel, Madagascan Vanilla and the base of today’s review, Mint Choc Swirl. I like that they have gone for the classic vanilla and mint choc but also decided to go for the ever present salted caramel.

The Mint Choco Swirl consists off American mint leaves, a rich cacao swirl and spirulina with swirls of rich chocolate. What is spirulina I hear you ask? Well spirulina is 65% protein and a rich source of numerous nutrients. Typically used as a dietary supplement, Oppo have used it to provide the natural green colouring for the Mint Choc Swirl ice cream.

Prices do vary from £4.99 – £5.49 depending where you buy it or whether it is on offer, currently Co-Op have it on a introductory offer basis, however it is certainly pricey for a 500ml tub. Pale green in colour, it was certainly a lot softer and I was able to scoop pretty much immediately after taking it out the freezer.

Digging in there were a number of pockets of chocolate sauce that I could spy throughout the tub. The chocolate was dark and slightly gooey giving an intense chocolate hit to the ice cream. The minty element was fresh without being toothpaste like. Oddly the first scoops I had the mint was rather subtle however the second helping I had the following day was delightfully minty. The consistency is somewhere between ice cream and sorbet and melted rather quickly in my bowl. A few ‘healthy’ ice cream’s I have tried always taste powdery, here’s looking at you Skinny Cow Ice Cream, but Oppo has certainly avoided the powderyness to create a very pleasant smooth texture.

I have to say I very much enjoyed this Oppo Ice Cream. It is certainly the best guilt free ice cream I have tasted. It is moreish and the trouble will be resisting eating the whole tub which would be a tad counterproductive on the health front. Oppo even have it covered on the recipe front and have some rather scrummy looking concoctions using their ice cream, hello Cookiewich & Peanut Butter Sandwiches!

I am intrigued to see where Oppo are going with their flavours, you know what I am going to say …. Peanut Butter is a must!!! In the meantime I will certainly be trying the other two flavours and buying this minty choc swirl again!

I love this ice cream so much, definitely my favourite of the 3 flavours they offer. I’m sure the old recipe they used to have though had way more chocolate swirl in 🙁

Sounds yum…so is it lower in calories and fat, is that why it’s guilt free? I find that there’s always a catch with these things haha. My fave guilt free ice cream so far was the Perfect world carrot cake ice cream xx

Reviewed this yesterday! Absolutely loved it, easily the best “healthy” ice cream out there, i’d be hard pressed to tell it apart from regular ice creams

Agreed. There is some controversy over its ‘superfood’ claim but regardless it is delicious. I think aside from the consistency the flavour is bang on to regular ice cream! x
